I am, if not yet the owner, the proud high bidder (and auction winner) of a 1964 Plymouth Barracuda with a (stuck) 273 and a factory 4 speed transmission. If all goes according to plan, my father and I will spend the day before Father’s Day driving to NJ to pick it up and bring it home to RI.

The plan is basically a mechanical freshening, get a 4bbl and a mild cam in the 273 (though I’m still thinking of upgrading to a 318), leave the outside as is except for fixing the rot, throw a carpet in it, clean up the seats, and that’s it. It’ll be a fun little car, a 318 or 4bbl 273 will make more than enough power, and it’s just so cool looking.

Productive Saturday so far. I’m happy with it.

If you do get rid of the 273 can I buy it off of you? I’ve always wanted to v8 my Dart but wanted a 273 so it’s more period correct.

Also I know quite a bit about A bodies.

You should keep the 273 simply because it’s called the Commando. Also according to my dad it can move an A-body pretty good with the 4 speed, but that was in the early 80s or something...

Every time I leave the house with it I could tell my wife I'm going commando, hahaha. It's not a heavy car, with a 4bbl and a cam and maybe like 250hp it'll be plenty quick.

My wife’s parents have a 64 273 4 speed all original(except a respray) Barracuda. California desert car all it’s life. It’s a really cool car that has just been repaired for the past 50 years. My 73 Valiant is the same condition, except I need new seat covers and new paint. I got a 63 Lancer 2 door post that I need to do something with. I’m gonna keep my 73 stock and see how long I can keep it going just fixing it. Parts are still readily available everywhere and I daily drive so it won’t rot into the ground. It’s actually a great car to daily, not the greatest mileage, and everything works including the A/C. It’s still got a good R-12 charge from 20 years ago and will freeze you out of the front seat.

unless i am mistaken the 273 shares the crank stroke with the 340......??..... and aren’t 75% of those cranks steel?? and doesnt the 360 share the same bore as the 340.....??

Haha exactly! Yeah his valiant had little 13" wheels, and stiffer suspension. He says that if you felt like it, you could nail it when a light turned green and turn right from the left lane before anyone else was moving :p

SO..... after some RESEARCH it has come to my knowledge that in the LA family of engines..... the 273 and 318 AND 340 all share the same stroke of 3.31 inches......... AND that the 360 has a 4 inch bore,...... and a 340 has a STOCK bore of 4.04.

SO..... a 360, bored 40 over with a 318/273 crank gets you a homebuilt 340. just buy pistons for the 340.

Just make sure you get a thick wall 360 if you do that, I’m told there are some thinwall blocks (like my 273) that really only want to be bored 30 over max.

i havent messed around a lot with the dodge motors myself, aside from routine repair stuff. hadnt run across super thinwall stuff.... poor casting, or core-shift of some sort? i would of thought with the small bore, that there would be extra meat to work with.... thanks for the heads up.

I’ll have to stay sharp with the “hand micrometer” when i go to looking.

I’ll talk to my dad and crew (the guys I’d probably take on the 30 hour round trip we’d need to do to retrieve it from RI to NC). We’d probably have it professionally rebuilt somewhere over a few years.

Any idea on how much you’d want for it?

$100? I mean it’s stuck, but it seems to just be from sitting rather than sitting because it was stuck. Its complete from the intake manifold to the oil pan, missing one valve cover and the exhaust manifolds.

Warwick, it’s about 30 minutes over the border if you’re coming from the south. The state is tiny, so it barely even matters what part of it, haha.
